Meet the Team

We are a group of highly dynamic people committed to finding successful energy & carbon management solutions for business.

Dr Russell Layberry, Project Manager

Russell is co-inventor of the SMEasure (business) and imeasure (home) building energy tools with Catherine Bottrill. He brings to SMEasure cutting-edge building energy research on measurement, performance benchmarking and reduction targeting. This ensures the technical analysis provided to our users is of the highest standard. Russell is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the tool’s development. He is directing the future technical and business development of SMEasure.

Russell has more than 15-years as a computational physicist. For the last 6 years his research at the Environmental Change Institute, a member of the UK Energy Research Centre, has focused on modelling energy flows and use in UK domestic and commercial buildings. He created the weekly degree day dataset for 77 UK weather stations. This dataset is now seamlessly integrated into SMEasure so all building energy use is automatically normalized for weather conditions. He holds a Doctorate in Plasma Physics from Aston University.

Catherine Bottrill, Project Advisor

Catherine is co-inventor of the SMEasure (business) and imeasure (home) building energy tools with Dr. Russell Layberry. She is actively involved alongside Russell in the strategic technical and business development of SMEasure.

She brings more than 7 years of expertise in carbon footprinting, online tools for energy management, building energy efficiency and behavior change. Currently she is doing a doctorate with the Research Programme on Values, Lifestyles and Environment (RESOLVE) led by Professor Tim Jackson at Surrey University. Her doctorate research is exploring the opportunities and challenges for the UK music industry to support the transformation to a low carbon society. She holds a Masters in Environmental Management from the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, Yale University.

Rob Bevan, Software Developer

Rob is responsible for SMEasure's user interface design and software development. Alongside Muriel, Rob also provides technical support to users.

Since 2003, Rob has worked mainly with nonprofits and on projects with an environmental focus. Rob is a partner at West Barn Studios Ltd in Oxfordshire and creative director at XPT Ltd in London. In over 10 years at XPT, Rob co-created some pioneering examples of new forms of online entertainment, including the BAFTA-winning Online Caroline. Previously, Rob was a founding partner and creative director at NoHo Digital, one of the UK's leading first-generation new media agencies, acquired in 1999 by Ogilvy.

Muriel Bonjean, Trial Co-ordinator

Muriel is building the SMEasure user community through implementation of our market strategy. She ensures the content on SMEasure provides our users with the latest research, policy and information on building energy monitoring and reduction planning. Muriel is working closely with users to ensure the results feedback and knowledge portal is of the highest value to them.

Muriel has more than 6 years research experience in the fields of climate change and natural resources management (particularly water ecosystems). She holds a European Masters in Environmental Technology and Management that she undertook in three European Universities.

Please contact Muriel Bonjean if you have any queries about SMEasure.
